Workers' Compensation Coverage
Effective September 1, 2016, participants in the IRIS program with iLIFE as their Fiscal Employer Agent are now covered by workers' compensation insurance through United Heartland. For information on United Heartland visit: http://www.unitedheartland.com/
NOTICE: IRIS Participants previously covered by Travelers’ Insurance were issued new United Heartland policies for workers’ compensation coverage on 09/01/16.
This spring, the State of Wisconsin passed new legislation AB 724 requiring all IRIS Fiscal Employer Agents (F/EAs) to provide workers’ compensation coverage.
Please see below for Frequently Asked Questions about workers' compensation and a link for a helpful video from United Heartland explaining this benefit.
What is workers' compensation?
Workers’ compensation is a specific type of insurance that helps provide wages and medical benefits to employees who have been injured on the job.
When will this change occur?
All IRIS participants who have iLIFE as their FEA are covered by United Heartland workers‘ compensation as of 9/1/2016.
Why are things changing?
How will this change benefit me? Does the Worker’s Compensation Act protect both employers and workers?
Yes, the Act provides protection to employers as well as workers. If an injury occurs in covered employment, the worker is automatically entitled to certain wage and medical benefits. The worker, however, is limited to those benefits. A workers' compensation policy is the exclusive remedy for a covered claim--meaning an insured employer is protected from any law suits brought by an employee because of the work related illness or injury.
Where can I get more information about coverage under the Act?
Contact the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development - Workers' Compensation Division at (608) 266-1340 or write to P.O. Box 7901, Madison, WI 53707-7901. The Division is located in the GEF 1 State Office Building, Room C100, 201 E. Washington Avenue, Madison. The Division also has a variety of information relating to this and other compliance issues on its website at: http://dwd.wisconsin.gov/wc.
