Session description: “Who’s The Boss? Transition Age Youth and Employer Authority”

As young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities make the passage from adolescence to adulthood, they are faced with many unique challenges. Large numbers of transition age youth are choosing to self-direct their services within IRIS and Family Care in Wisconsin.

While these programs support the principles of independent living and employer authority, they do not always dictate the program participant’s path or outcome. For some young people, the ability to locate, hire, train, schedule and supervise caregivers can liberating. But with choice comes responsibility and for others, this increased accountability can be an overwhelming barrier to success.

"Who’s the Boss? Transition Age Youth and Employer Authority" will address these common challenges and provide solutions through a discussion of best practices.

Attendees will:

  • Review the roles and responsibilities assigned to Transition Age Youth utilizing self-directed service options.
  • Articulate the meaning of “Employer Authority”.
  • Explore the self-directed service models available in Wisconsin.
  • Identify the toolkit, skills and support that will empower success.
  • Understand the boundaries and ethics concerns that develop between program participants and caregivers.
  • Gain knowledge of current best practices unique to the delivery of services for transition-age youth on the path to independent living.
